John White
Art Collection
John White was an artist, cartographer, and Virginia
pioneer who was born in England in 1540. In 1585, at the age of 44 he
was commissioned to travel with an English expedition to Roanoke Island
to illustrate life in the New World. His paintings provided Europeans
with some of the earliest sights on the North American continent. White
was appointed governor of the second Roanoke colony in 1587 by Sir
Walter Raleigh. As governor, he escaped the fate of the lost colony when
he returned to England in search of supplies for the struggling colony.
The colony disappeared while he was away. After the failure of the
Roanoke Island colony, White moved to Plymouth, England. In his later
years, the artist drew maps for Sir Walter Raleigh. White died in 1606
